MAC TECHNICAL SUPPORT

….one-on-one reasonable rates for expert service in Manhattan

If you have issues with your MAC, the Genius Bar at the APPLE stores may sound like a good idea (its free with your Apple Care plan) , but think again. IF your problem is simple; see a Genius Bar person, they are great to have on hand in a pinch for free service and simple problems and to get “some” idea of what is going on.

BUT, if you have bigger issues, that require a thoughtful review of the situation and finding the best strategy approach, (the wrong approach can cost you days of problems) save yourself the frustration of having to articulate the problem AND getting it solved in 15 minutes which is all you get at the Genius Bar.

Apples Genius Bar:

Fact: they are almost running behind on appointments, as much as an hour.

Fact: Sessions are designed for 15 minutes. They don’t clarify that. They will…if you ask. So, they need to rush you and solve the problem FAST…. or attempt to solve it.

Fact:  It’s a conveyor belt of service. The guys are really nice, work really hard at Apple servicing 30 – 40 clients in a day,  and do the best they can with 15 minutes. But, it is not the best service for problems that require “time”…more than 15 minutes start to finish.

Fact: You are not allowed to request the same person on a repeat problem…so if you have to return, (and you probably will for more complex issues) you have to start ALL OVER AGAIN explaining yourself to the new “Genius” who also is rushed so he’s really not not available for you to cover everything. They are friendly, nice and professional, but the strategy is, “how do I resolve this problem as quickly as possible and make it look like its solved, and “hope” that it is because “we” are backed up an hour now on our other appointments.

Fact:  Apple care does now have a new service package. Obviously they realized the “Genius Bar” was not serving all their clients needs. So for $499 a year you can get their new service option which is more hands on.

Still, if getting your problem resolved is critical, you time is valuable and time is money call a specialist to come to your home.

I called Jed who has is own business:

http://www.promacnyc.com/

Jed goes FAR beyond what you would expect.

Jed will make is right, is available on the phone or email for follow up questions, can work remotely, or side by side. He will provide you with many “extras” you weren’t expecting to improve you computer experience. He keeps a history of what he has done for you and your issues so you are NOT starting from ground zero every time you have a problem. He really helped me get my “computer” life together. He’s a mature professional who “gets” that your computer is important and it must be fixed correctly.

Jed is in Manhattan and will go anywhere but particularly great for those of us right here.

San Francisco Photographer, Carol Drobek

ONCE UPON A TIME,  I lived in a fog, a very thick fog on the top of a  hill. Living on hills so steep, the fog horns nightly calls from the Bay, soothing me to sleep. Like “living in the clouds”, I thought I’d had died and gone to heaven.

Though heaven it was not…but close enough. This place was called, San Francisco. And the very high hill, was Russian Hill where I had the good fortune to move in next to the very talented Carol Drobek as a neighbor.

Being creative myself, I was delighted to be living next to such a talented artist producing such inspiring work. We became great friends, so….when she ran out of wall space, I volunteered mine! Carol lives her art. You see it in her home, you taste and feel it after one of her many dinners she lovingly prepared for her close friends, and you experienced it,  in the magic she created in……”Carols secret garden”,  from which she retrieved many of the objects that ended up in her work. Her garden; a labor of love we all benefited from, as it was the building’s garden. 12 units, 4 floors that overlooked this splendid sight. Once a year she would invite all her friends to gather together for a yearly gardening day of prunning and planting. This was always followed by a huge feast of turkey, home baked bread, various side dishes and homemade pies!

The shot below was taken from my living room window.

Carol’s story began in Philadelphia  where she studied photography at Moore College of Art receiving her BFA and completed her graduate studies at the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, NY.  Two grants followed; the New York State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment on the Arts. She has lived in San Francisco, in the same apartment ever since.

Her Process: Her creations are produced manually in the darkroom without the use of any computers or technology. Found objects are placed directly onto photographic paper and exposed to light leaving an impression of the object.  Color is “painted” on using hand held light sources with gels. There is no PhotoShop here. All manual, layer by layer, built by her gifted hand to achieve the final magnificent result.

And now may I introduce, the work of my dear friend and gifted artist…Carol Drobek

Shadow’s Journey” addresses the human desire for a hero who is willing to risk great peril to save the world; beautifully embraces the principles of finding True Heart and the Reawakening of the Spirit of Magic. A wonderful, meaningful gift for this holiday season for the child in your life…or the child…in….you. Shadow In The Heavens

Promise Of True Heart

And now that your breath has been taken away………

If you cant afford a “one of a kind” piece, about $1000. Scans of the original can be acquired for about $350 – $400. These are generally 16″ x 20″. Small prints 8″ by 10″ run about $35.

The blue heart piece, that looks like a heart floating on the bottom of the blue sea, has been the top favorite over the years. Interesting how the most simple piece has attracted the most attention.  But exploring her website you will see Carol is not afraid of exploring the more primative of human emotions; anger, fear, hatred and greed.

If you are planning a trip to San Francisco, Carol would be happy to share her work with you personally. Visit her and enjoy a perspective of San Francisco that’s not on the tourist map. If its Spring or Summer, be sure to ask to see…the garden.

Thoughts for Thanksgiving……

This is my last post til after Thanksgiving.  Off to Wilmington, Delaware where family and friends await. Thanksgiving, my favorite holiday of the year. A time to be with those you love, eat the feast of the holiday, and take the time …to be grateful. We are always going so fast. Shut down the ego for a few days and be… in the moment.  We live our lives as if it’s forever and then wonder where it all went. We weren’t paying attention. Pay attention this Thanksgiving holiday. Take the time to tell those you love… they matter, and “to feel”… in your heart…. gratitude.

Below: The beautiful countryside of  Wilmington, Delaware

‘Twas the night of Thanksgiving,
Twas the night of Thanksgiving,
But I just couldn’t sleep.
I tried counting backwards,
I tried counting sheep.
The leftovers beckoned – the dark meat and white,
But I fought the temptation with all of my might.Tossing and turning with anticipation,
The thought of a snack became infatuation.
So, I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door
And gazed at the fridge, full of goodies galore.
I gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes,
Stuffing with gravy, green beans and tomatoes.I felt myself swelling so plump and so round,
Till all of a sudden, I rose off the ground.I crashed through the ceiling, floating into the sky
With a mouthful of pudding and a handful of pie
But, I managed to yell as I soared past the trees.
Happy eating to all — pass the cranberries, please.May your stuffing be tasty, may your turkey be plump,
May your potatoes & gravy have nary a lump,
May your yams be delicious, may your pies take the prize,
May your Thanksgiving dinner stay off of your thighs.

“ANOTHER HAPPY DAY”….Brilliant… A must see…

“Gen Arts” “Another Happy Day”  pre screening was last night, Wednesday in Chelsea. A brilliant film by first time writer and director Samuel Levinson who won the 2011 Sundance Film Festival Waldo Saltscreenwriting award for his directorial debut.

The film centers around a family gathering, instigated by a wedding; the combination of family members creates a “Molotov cocktail” of drama, dredging up internal demons from the past. Their “issues” are old ones they’ve carried around for a long time; powerful, highly charged, unresolved; yet Sam doesn’t allow us to wallow in the drama too long. He yanks us out suddenly with unexpected humor to shift the mood with laughter.

The script is mature and intelligently written. It’s characters fully developed. We are truly engaged in them. The cast plays off each other so well, they make us believe that, these are real family dynamics we are witnessing. The family issues addressed are so varied….clearly, Sam did not want anyone to feel left out when he was writing the script. ( I am being sardonic of course )

Perhaps this is why some of the critics took such issue to the “so called” dark side. The clever script, triggered in themselves their own “family issues” to the point that…. they missed the films point.  The audience is served an avalanche of original and very emotional dramatic scenes but then rescued…. suddenly, and unexpectedly from the darkest moments with clever, sardonic humor. I loved this film’s intelligence, was totally entertained and would see it again.

Woody Allen, was the first to cross the cultural taboos of exposing  family dysfunctions and putting them on the big screen.  ”Crimes and Misdemeanors”, “Hannah and Her Sisters”, “Shadows and Fog”, ”Husbands and Wives”,  all dealt with the imperfections of relationships and their capacity to inflict absolute pain on the ones they love most… but despite this unpleasant truth, Allen got us laughing at our own human frailties and imperfections.

If you got Allen, you’ll get Sam.

The all-star cast includes: Ellen Barkin, Ezra Miller, George Kennedy, Demi Moore, Kate Bosworth, Thomas Haden Church, and the legendary Ellen Burstyn.

Shots from the pre screening’s after party below:

The directors; on the right with the hat, Sam Levinson, writer and director of, “Another Happy Day”; standing to his side is J.C. Khoury who produced and directed his debut feature film The Pill (2011).

Sam Levinson, at the tender age of 22, wrote the script for “Another Happy Day” over the course of three weeks from his home in Connecticut. It poured out of him, effortlessly he explained. My question to him was, how can such a script, whose key actors were older women with such complex emotions have been written by a 22 year old!!! The film is worth seeing just to witness that incredible fact. 22 years old then and only 26 now. Incredible.

This wonderful evening was brought to us by the GEN ART organization. For those who don’t know them, make a point to get online and get on their mailing list. Their events are legendary, marrying top quality artists’ work with social gatherings to mix, mingle, and drink. They always have a sponsored bar in the very best establishments with the very best liquor.  Ian the founder of GEN ART definitely knows how to host a party. Pure class all the way.  It’s an evening guaranteed to please.

STING – An unannounced, private concert at the Apple Store, Upper West Side

While at the “Genius Bar” in the Apple Store, I inquired about the stage set up on the lobby level. “Sting is playing tonight” the Apple staff explained. “Its free”. “First come first serve, just go up and get your wrist tagged”. You could not sell it for profit. Tearing it off made it invalid, but…who would?

The concept was so Steve, so democratic , so Californian, so the 60′s world he grew up in….but also brilliant marketing to introduce the new IPad app, “Appumentary”.

http://www.showbiz411.com/2011/11/15/sting-swings-with-new-ipad-appumentary

Once I secured my pass, I dashed home, grabbed my camera, and returned to claim my third row, center seat when Stings wife, Trudy, walked in front of me and looked directly into my camera. I wasn’t ready! My flash wasn’t turned on. As a photographer, I should have learned by now the best opportunities pass you by (literally) when you are not expecting it. A metaphor for life.  My apologies to Trudy for shooting her without a flash. The shot was almost black but I lightened it to the max. Her radiance still came thru.

Afterwards, she said something sweet, patted my shoulder, and sat in the seat directly behind me.  It was all rather surreal.

Then came her husband….Sting.

We were all overcome with emotion. You cannot compare a concert at Madison Square Garden to a concert played for an intimate group of about 150 people.

He was interviewed first. He told us he lived in NYC, rides his bike everywhere,  and that being famous in NYC was the easiest city to be famous in. “New Yorkers”, he said “are all such strong individuals who all run their own individual show, in fact” he joked…”you’re not at my show tonight”…”I’m at yours”. We all laughed and clapped. He knows us so well.

He admitted he was actually a shy man…and it was apparent during the interview. It’s one thing singing with his band, focusing an audience on the music. Quite another being cross examined by an interviewer on stage with 150 pairs of eyes staring at him.

It was lovely how he continued to look out into the audience to find his wife Trudy and sought out her smile several times throughout the evening, his face beaming with delight each time his gaze met hers. For those who are not aware, the tremendous bond of devoted love and authentic passion they have for each other….is legendary. Together now 30 years. If only we could all be so lucky to find a mate we could have that kind of connection with. What a happier place, earth would be.

He played many of his songs we love and then for the finale, he dedicated to Steven Jobs his song, “Fragile”.

Steve’s passing, though expected, saddened me when it arrived. At 56, his end came too soon. He had so much left to do.  The end of an era of a great visionary who brought his dreams to life and changed the world. You can educate a person with facts and figures, but you can not teach creative genius. It is….or it isn’t. Listening to Sting sing “Fragile” was such a special and fitting display of respect for the man whose life’s work, benefited us all. We were all moved. I’ve included it below with the lyrics.

Thank you Sting for your gift of song to us.

If blood will flow when flesh and steel are one
Drying in the colour of the evening sun
Tomorrow’s rain will wash the stains away
But something in our minds will always stay
Perhaps this final act was meant
To clinch a lifetime’s argument
That nothing comes from violence and nothing ever could
For all those born beneath an angry star
Lest we forget how fragile we are

On and on the rain will fall
Like tears from a star like tears from a star
On and on the rain will say
How fragile we are how fragile we are

On and on the rain will fall
Like tears from a star like tears from a star
On and on the rain will say
How fragile we are how fragile we are
How fragile we are how fragile we are

….Sting

“GEN ART”- Wed 11/16 only – Presenting the new film, “Another Happy Day” with After Party in Chelsea to follow!

Today I got a thrill in my email. The film, “Another Happy Day” that I am dying to see ( I am a film fanatic) is being featured by Gen Art, Wed Evening with an after party!!!! I almost don’t want to share this as Gen Art is already too popular among the sophisticated, young urban crowd. If you have not been to a Gen Art event you are in for a delightful surprise. The events are always attended by some of the actors in the film, (bring your camera); even A listers have shown up. There is Q&A after the movie which is answered by the actors themselves. Then there is the after party …and yes, the actors show up and, yes they are open and approachable. After party always in the coolest place/bar “of the moment” but with a salon type buzz. People are there cause they love film and want be with their own…and of course there is lots of networking.

NYC MARATHON. CONGRATULATIONS to all participants!

Congratulations to all the participants. What a great day it was. The mood was infectious, full of smiling faces, people gathering and cheering on their friends and family. The mood of the group and their joy, greeting love ones at the finish line, put a smile on my face….and in my heart. It was New York at one of its finest moments. Thanks to all the New Yorkers and all those who came from around the world for making this a joyous day.

Theron and Ashton looking good in Indian inspired designs….

I attended the Vintage Mens show in NYC and the Indian inspired jacket below caught my eye.

Theron at “The Archives” was kind enough to model it for me. Can be yours by contacting ”The Archives”  at 917-587-4982 or go to archivesnyc@nyc.rr.com for contact info.  Seems Ashton Kutcher (pictured below) also embraces the look.  Are we seeing a potential new trend developing?

Theron is 6’3″ so the jacket would hit longer on someone shorter, though I thought this hit him just right. Good shoulder room. It’s by Pendleton, Portland, Oregon, XL, excellent condition, probably from the late 1970′s. PIRCE $225.00

In troubled water: Ashton Kutcher has faced considerable criticism after he made a comment about coach Joe Paterno on Twitter I

How ironic. I had posted the top jacket last weekend of the Pendleton vintage jacket. It’s not a trend I have seen around but to me it “stands on its own” as a cool, alternative look. A fun way to brighten up a pair of jeans on a cold, grey, weekend day. THEN, just today I spotted Ashton with this jacket above. New trend? Fine by me….

Andy Rooney, Mainstay on ‘60 Minutes’, Died in NYC at 92 – NYTimes.com

Andy Rooney,  60 Minutes, writer of commentary for 60 Minutes from 1978 – 2011; died in NYC Friday at 92 years old. I loved his commentaries which had a refreshing and unique perspective (sort of why “Betty White” at 85 went viral in the past few years in ads and tv ); his sardonic humor could only have been created by someone who had the perspective of 9 decades of life.

His commentary encouraged us to laugh at ourselves and to stop taking ourselves so seriously, if only for five minutes.

His angle was making commentary on the “modern world” from the perspective a man in his 90′s on any subject from candy bars to dogs.

“if dogs could talk, it would take a lot of the fun out of owning one.”… Andy Rooney

American’s love affair with anorexic “girls” vs Italy’s love of “women” – by Dolce & Gabbana

When I came across this ad campaign by Dolce & Gabbana. I had to share it as it expresses so well this US phenomenon.

The photos, below, are worth a thousand words, demonstrating the contrast of ideals of “beauty” (the “pre adolescent” look; undeveloped sexuality, physically or emotionally) vs European ideals of finding beauty in…. women.

The written comments of the UK blog reinforce the preference of “women” in Italy and Europe. It’s a perspective never “discussed” in the American media; but young women “get” the message here loud and clear. To be attractive to men, they must maintain “preadolescent bodies”; the bodies they had before the natures sex hormones fully developed them into women. Then, we wonder why anorexia, whose roots started in the 1960′s by the fashion industry, have grown to epidemic numbers in this country.  Anorexia nervosa occurs in females 10 times more than in males.

Va-Va-Voom! Monica Bellucci shows off her sexy hourglass figure in a corset and tiny shorts for new Dolce & Gabbana campaign

Monica is known for her stunning hourglass figure, which she regularly flaunts. The 47-year-old was smouldering, posing for the camera in the revealing outfit, alongside Italian model Bianca Balti. Despite the 20 year age gap, the older actress certainly showed the younger model a thing or two.
